In the United Kingdom, the physiotherapy is said to be founded by four nurses in 1894. They established the Society of Trained Masseuses to counter the disrepute that the profession was receiving due to the unscrupulous practices of a few persons by offering immoral services in the name of massage. In the year 1920, the Society received a Royal Charter and amalgamated with another similar institution, the Institute of Massage & Remedial Gymnastics. The name, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy or CSP, was adopted in 1944.
